It’s not just trendy. Yoga is actually amazing for your mental and physical health. Even exercise novices and people who aren’t “bendy” experience the benefits of yoga from the start. Combining breathing techniques, meditation, and various types of stretching, it leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after only a few sessions. It improves energy and vitality without feeling as harsh on your body as other exercises. Not to say it’s a “soft” workout—vigorous yoga with a good instructor works your mind and body just as much as weightlifting at the gym. Regular practice increases flexibility, muscle strength, and mental awareness. It helps with weight management, is a great warm up and cool down for athletes, and protects from injury by strengthening the body. It also works wonders on your posture and stress levels.
Yoga also has a profound impact on your mental state. It genuinely makes you happy by forcing your body into confident, soothing poses. Practicing yoga helps improve concentration, keep anxiety at bay, and helps you sleep better. It is proven to quiet the mind and body, reducing the risk of everything from heart attacks to depression. It makes you more self aware, and boosts self confidence. Simply trying, even if you’re can’t do every pretzel-like pose, teaches your subconscious mind that you are worth working and fighting for. Even light exercising makes you feel more confident in your body and your ability to live life.
