4 years, 11 semesters, 38 classes, and 95 credit hours into my college career and I finally stumbled upon my first true taste of wellness—right here on North Dillard street.
I came in with a list of what I wanted: an oil change, a new sound system, and a fresh coat of paint. “I’m here to upgrade myself!” To grow, change, evolve, and become a better model than ever before. Here to be molded and crafted into a professional superior than all the rest. I gave my service request to Dr. Jacque Dunegan, my soon-to-be mentor on this journey towards wellness. Dr. D smiled and kindly handed me back another list; one that had nothing to do with the improvements I had ordered. “This is what you need, not want.” As I’m reading the to-do list it seemed awfully ridiculous…retake your driver’s license exam, present a speech on Staying Safe on the Road, and trust that everything else will be taken care of. What is this woman talking about? I came here to be challenged—to be tasked with viable skills that translated into my professional career, this list doesn’t seem right. It’s too easy. The very last item was to rebuild the framing of my car before anything else could be added. As perplexed as I was, I trusted her and with the shake of our hands, my Practicum had begun.

Throughout the months of my work with Dr. D and the WELLTRAX team, my to-do list was filled with experiences that enriched my internship with nothing more than the essence of life and all of its joys. I met the most wondrous people through this practicum. From the clients that I worked with to the invaluable interviews I had with the top professionals in the business. My sense of community flourished as I gave speeches on Sleep Health, Meditation, Disease and Nutrition, and Living a Heart-Healthy life as well as the article written on Shoulder Flexibility. I will forever treasure these once in a lifetime opportunities that lead me to build my confidence and develop relationships with amazing people. I would like to thank them all deeply for their time and patience with me. Thank you for your lessons, I appreciate you all.
My 1-on-1 appointments with Dr. D ended up being more challenging than I had ever anticipated. She delivered to me exactly what I needed—the truth. Her ability to guide individuals towards wellness and away from worseness proved to be the most impactful piece of my time with her. Most of all I got to know myself through these past 5 months. The path I was journeying down was one filled with chaos and control, a place of demise and dysfunction. I now find myself heading back towards a life filled with awareness, appreciation, and gratuity. Thank you, Dr. D, for giving me a chance, for being the one to get in my face and ruffle my feathers.
The taste of wellness is bittersweet. One that is worth the brief moment of sour that leads to sweetness. To put down the reigns or give the wheel to someone else is a bout of courage that I am proud of myself for taking. Though my car received no new paint, it shines more vibrant than ever before with the newly decorated interior. Thank you forever, WELLTRAX!
